Our Approach: Science Meets Happiness

At HMS, we recognize that life can be challenging, and things don’t always go the way we plan. But that doesn’t mean happiness is out of reach. We use Positive Psychology research as the bedrock of our work, providing you with the resources and support needed to practice happiness daily. Our approach is about empowering you to take control of your happiness, no matter the circumstances.

Our Story: A Partnership in Happiness

In 2022, Steve and Jon came together to support individuals living with addictions. They quickly realized how well they complemented each other—Jon’s calm and knowledgeable approach balanced perfectly with Steve’s dry British sense of humor. Together, they developed the Happiness Scale, a tool that has become central to their work, helping people track and understand their happiness levels. This innovative approach is now at the heart of HMS, and we’re excited to share it with you. Whether you choose to join one of our “How to Manage Your Happiness” courses or subscribe to our monthly newsletter, we’re here to help you on your journey to a happier life.

Our hope is that you will emerge with new tools and practices that will help you become happier. Our goal is for you to leave this course with an increased sense of happiness as well as stronger relationships.

Meet The Team

Stephen Quinlan, RSW

Executive Director

Steve has been a social worker for over 35 years and has practised in England, Scotland and British Columbia. He has developed his own unique practice based on his extensive experience. When he was a Director at Plea, a large not-for-profit, he built a database designed to track and improve service and produce evidence of compliance for accreditation purposes.

He has also been a Subject Matter Expert for The Association of Social Workers Board of North America. His work earned him The Most Inspiring Social Worker of the year in 2015 from the University of British Columbia Social Work Department and the British Columbia Association of Social Workers. Shortly after his award, Steve took a role as an Addictions Counsellor, where he developed the concept of Happiness Management, the big brother to Anger Management. Anger Management teaches you how to put out fires, whereas Happiness Management teaches you how to avoid them.

Steve has served on four Boards of not-for-profit societies and started Happiness Management Society to support and inform people of the science of how to be happy. Steve personally practices Happiness Management daily.

Steve delivered a truly engaging talk that was both authentic and heartfelt. What better of a topic than happiness. What stood out most was the genuine care and sincerity he brought to the message, which made it easy to connect with and reflect on. Steve reminds us that we create our happiness every day. He shared his ideas in a clear, approachable way that felt very human and grounded. It was a thoughtful presentation that stayed with me after it ended.
